Plurk Share

Collette (Colin) the Baby Whale lost its mom in Pittwater - SydneyJJ Grows Up JJ長大了另一篇和小鯨魚有關的文章同樣的這也是一篇在我奇摩部落格的一篇舊文章JJ的故事有個完美的結局請大家聽聽看

The JJ Story

1 It was a faithful day in January 1997 when an abandoned gray whale beached herself near Marina Del Rey, California. The whale was only a few days old when she was rescued and brought to Sea World San Diego.

2 Only fourteen feet long and one thousand five hundred pounds, the little whale was found to be dehydrated, and almost comatose. She was so weak that animal care team members had to hold her upright in the water and swim her around in the medical pool.

3 The outlook was not good. Dr. Jim McBain gave the grim findings.

“Well, the animal is in pretty weak condition. It’s dehydrated. It’s very short on energy resources. Energy supply is very thin. The prognosis for a full recovery is no better than poor at this point.”

4 But with the dedication of the Sea World staff giving round-the-clock care, the little whale, known as JJ, overcame the odds. JJ was put on a specially formulated diet, made up of a mixture of heavy cream, minced fish, and vitamins. She was hand-fed the formula at first and gained weight at an astounding rate.

5 Eventually, JJ was introduced to solid food and was eating on her own. JJ thrived at Sea World and as she grew, so did her pool. She became the center of attention as people from around the world followed her progress and visited her in San Diego.

6 It gave so many, the opportunity to get their first real life look at a gray whale.

7 There is much yet to be learned about gray whales, their patterns and habits. JJ gave us the opportunity to learn a tremendous amount about gray whales, their needs and requirements.

8 As JJ grew, it was discovered that her vocalizations didn’t show the wide range of sounds gray whales normally make. It’s known that these vocalizations play a very important communication and navigation role in the wild. With the help of audio technology, researchers piped different whale vocalizations into her pool as she was feeding. They hoped that when JJ was released back into the sea, she would recognize these calls and sounds and follow them to other gray whales.

9 After 13 months of constant care, literally tons of food and lots of love, it was time for JJ to be released. She was well over a year old, weighed seventeen thousand pounds and measured almost thirty-one feet in length. It was no small task to design the equipment, gear and strategy to transport JJ to the sea.

10 On March 31, 1998, in a bittersweet mixture of laughter and tears, JJ was released. After only a few days, she scraped off her tracking devices, so there was no way to follow her. She was released as the gray whales were making their way north to the colder Arctic waters.

11 Hopefully after learning their sounds, being taught to eat and thriving so well at the park, she connected with the other whales and has been making the annual migration with them ever since.

12 The story of JJ is truly one of the most incredible rescue and rehab stories in which Sea World and the world has been involved. The story of a little whale that taught us more than we could imagine, that taught us to believe in miracles. The story of a little whale that will leave her foot print on our hearts forever.

JJ the Gray Whale

JJ the whale’s story

Sea World San DiegoSea World San Diego曾經試著要訓練GiGi來作表演就像條Orca一樣不過後來失敗了Sea World San Diego也在一年後將GiGi野放

而Sea World San Diego也在輿論壓力下接受了JJ出乎Sea World San Diego意料之外的是在這新聞的被廣泛報導之下JJ成了Sea World San Diego最耀眼的明星許多遊客四面八方的到Sea World San Diego就為了看JJ一眼當然Sea World San Diego也得到了些商業利益

Marina is now known as JJ. JJ is now swimming free. Let the JJ story act as a symbol to protect our oceans and all of its creatures. Let her story motivate us to increase efforts to rescue rehabilitate and, release back to the wild any marine mammal that we have the ability to assist. Let JJ’s saga also be a lesson to Sea World and the whole captive display industry that THIS IS WHAT THE SHOW SHOULD BE. The rescuing, rehabilitation and release back to the wild of injured or orphaned marine mammals. Not capturing them from the wild, taking them from their families and sentencing them to a shortened, stressed out life in captivity.

We Wish JJ the best.

(We all do!!!
